material, technique, media handling

A

in jenny savilles self-potrait reverse , Paint as flesh - saville works with oil paints that are applied in thick layers which looks like flesh , saville sees paint as skin its feeling, and apperance is seen when she layers different colours which are seen on her cheeks and mouth, which is called the impasto technique.

  1. in jenny savilles self portrait reverse we see her application of paint she likes to smear and scarpe it giving every brush stroke a life of its own this shows the skins imperfections and its broken skin.
  2. in jenny savilles self- portrait reverse the form shown is when she uses large gestrual brushstrokes her use of tone and colour within the marks create form. this makes her painting reconigsable even if painted in impasto style,

A
  1. saville also used the impasto technique which means building layers of thick paint.
  2. texture- the aggressive brush strokes in her self portrait “reverse” shows the texture as if it is an actual flesh wound on saville which makes us think of trauma, victimisation, and disease.
  3. Form- although saville uses large gestural strokes i. her self portrait her use of tone and colour creates form these make elements of her painting able to be recognised even when painted in the impasto technique.

Texture

A
  1. The aggressive brushstrokes in her self portrait “reverse” shows the texture of the fleshy wound on saville. Which makes us think of trauma victimisation and disease
  2. Saville has created a rough patchy, uneven texture through her layered paint in different colours using energetic brushstrokes which is smeared around the mouth and cheeks this creates a sense of movement which draws the viewers attention to the multiple directions of layers and brushstrokes.
  3. Saville has used a smooth texture in the background by blending the clouds together to create an even smooth glossy texture/ surface . And also she has used energetic brush strokes to create a rough and exciting texture this creates similarity within the piece and draws viewers to the textured face.

  2. Positioning - Saville placed her head on the side creating COMPOSITION, this causes the viewer to copy the painting by turning their head also side ways to see the face better and make eye contact with the painting.
  3. Circular- Saville has used a circular composition in her self portrait her circled face takes up most of the canvas and draws the viewers attention to her facial features and mark marking
