Jeppesen - Air Traffic Control Flashcards
(23 cards)
What does FIS stand for?
Flight Information Service
If using a “Wind Shear Escape Manoeuvre” what is the terminology for tower?
“Wind Shear Escape”
Define a Control Area (CTA)
Controlled airspace existing from a specified level to a higher specified level
Define a Control Zone (CTR)
Controlled airspace existing from the earths surface to a specified level.
What is RA1?
Restricted airspace - May flight plan through. Most likely will get clearance
What is RA2?
Restricted Airspace - Pilots must not flight plan through unless using a specified preferred route. Clearance is not guaranteed
What is RA3?
Restricted Airspace - Do not flight plan through. You will not be cleared.
Lighting required at an airport to takeoff/land
Runway edge Threshold Wind direction indicator obstacle lighting when specified in local procedures Plus for RPT Taxiway Apron floodlights All lighting to be electric
What if an airport does not have an illuminated windsock?
Can use observer or Automatic weather station
Lighting time requirements for manual lights - departure and arrival
10 mins before departure to 30 mins after
30 mins before ETA plus till when taxiing has been completed
Alternate requirements - Cloud
More than SCT below the alternate minimum
FEW + FEW = SCT
FEW + SCT = BKN
SCT + SCT = BKN/OVC
Alternate requirements - Visibility
Less than the alternate minimum (including a PROB%)
Alternate requirements - Wind
A crosswind or tailwind greater than the max for that aircraft - Wind gusts must be considered
Alternate requirements - Thunderstorms
Plan for an alternate - Unless its an INTER or TEMPO, then you can plan to hold
Are INTER and TEMPO’s cumulative?
No
Buffer periods required for FM/BECMG periods
30 minutes before or after respectively
Does a 30 minutes buffer apply to a TTF?
No. Flights which will be completed within the time of the validity of the TTF may be planned wholly with reference to the destination TTF
If a TTF has two visibilities, when does an operational requirement apply?
When the higher visibility is less than the alternate minimum
Alternate minima for IFR aircraft (3)
- Airport with an approach - Alternate minima on the chart
- Airport with an approach but no airport forecast is available or is provisional - plan for an alternate
- Airport with no approach - Last route segment LSALT + 500 and 8km vis
Alternate requirements - NAVAIDS for RPT and Charter
You need an alternate, unless;
Destination is served by a navaid and the aircraft has two independent and seperate nav systems that can use the aid; OR
Destination has two navaids (different ones) and your aircraft has the instruments to use the aids
If you can’t comply with the above, you don’t require an alternate if the cloud is no more than SCT below the final route segments LSALT plus 500’ and vis is +8km and the aircraft can be navigated to the destination under IFR nav standards
Lighting alternate requirements
Portable - Need an alternate unless you have a responsible person
Electric lighting - Need an alternate unless you have standby power or portable lights with a responsible person
PAL - Need an alternate unless you have standby power and a responsible person
Nominating an alternate airport with PAL
RPT (pax carrying or above 3500kg): Cant be PAL unless there is a responsible person
Other: Can be PAL provided your aircraft has dual VHF, or single VHF and a HF and 30 minutes holding fuel
How can you avoid planning for an alternate due lighting?
Hold till first light plus 10 minutes
