Jesus' resurrection Flashcards
(28 cards)
What were the 5 events of John 20?
- John “saw and believed”
- Mary doesn’t recognise Jesus at first, thinking he’s a gardener. Believes him when she hears Jesus call her name.
- Disciples receive the holy spirit.
- Thomas believes once he touches Jesus’ wounds
- John says everyone will believe once they read this evidence.
What are these 5 episodes form?
A chiasm
What structure do these events form?
Chiastic structure of ABCBA
What does each letter represent?
A = Jesus doesn’t appear but is believed in bc of evidence
B = appears to those failing to recognise him
C = imparts Holy Spirit
What is a criticism of this narrative?
Highly structured. Seems like this could have been arranged by different people over time?
What are the 3 events that happen in John 21?
- Jesus appears to disciples at the Sea of Galilee but is not recognised at first. Disciples throw in their net at his command and they become so full of fish they couldn’t haul them. Then recognise him and run to the short to eat w/ him
- Jesus commissions Peter to shepherd his people
- Jesus’ testimony is confirmed
What does John 20-21 show?
- Jesus’ resurrected body is like his his earthly body, but also different ( can walk through doors etc)
- He wasn’t completely recognisable in his resurrected body, looked slightly different (hence not recognised)
What does Paul’s understanding of 1 Corinthians 15 tell us about believers and resurrection?
- Christian believer will also be resurrected because Jesus was
- The fact that Christianity exists is proof of the resurrection as this is the basis of the religion
What is the analogy Paul uses of the seed?
Human bodies = seeds planted in earth. WEAKER, PERISHABLE
Heavenly body = different yet connected. POWERFUL, IMPERSIHABLE
This transition to heavenly bodies will instantly happen and we will be changed. God has power over death.
How does Paul differentiate between earthly and resurrected bodies?
Resurrected is NOT the same as resuscitation.
Jesus resuscitates Lazarus (John) and Jairus’ daughter (Mark) but they RETURN to EARTHLY bodies.
How do we understand the afterlife using 1 Corinthians 15?
- Doesn’t begin immediately after death
- Christ returns first
- We are raised from death
- We are judged
- Both body and soul are resurrected
How do we understand death?
Philippians 1:21-24
What does Philippians 1:21-24 show us?
- don’t fear death. We are with Christ which is better than labour in the flesh
- Immediate union with Christ when you die
How do we understand the soul?
Matthew 10:28
What does Matthew 10:28 show us?
- don’t fear death and persecution
- our souls continue after bodily death
What was Rudolf Bultmann’s beliefs about myths?
- DEMYTHOLOGISE the New Testament aka remove mythical elements w/ supernatural etc
- Impossible for modern readers to believe mythical accounts
- SO wanted to interpret NT in a way MODERN readers could understand
- Resurrection is a MYTH and NOT historical
How did Bultmann allow resurrection to retain meaning?
- allows and inspires faith
- resurrection happens WITHIN people once they hear preaching/experience faith
3.Important thing about Jesus isn’t his resurrection, but being seen through “eyes of faith” as RISEN ONE by Christians
What were Bultmman’s beliefs about Jesus’ crucifixion?
- Already showed Son of God’s victory of power over death
- Crucifixion contained resurrection within it. SO no other historical event
What did Bultmann believe Easter was about?
- arising of EARLY CHURCH not Jesus’ physical body
- rise of faith through preaching of disciples
-Preaching leads to illumination, not belief in resurrection
What are some arguments against Bultmann’s theory?
- Denial of an actual resurrection goes against the basis of Christianity and makes it meaningless
- Historical reliability is affirmed by many modern Christians today and therefore understandable
- W/ out resurrection, Christians won’t have eternal life
- Many philosophers who’ve denied the resurrection as historical have become agnostic or atheist. SO, denying resurrection as historical is denying Christianity itself
What was N.T. Wright’s beliefs about Jesus’ resurrection?
- Marks the start of a restoration of creation which will be completes on Jesus’ second coming
What was N.T. Wright’s definition of a resurrection?
It isn’t life after death.
It’s life AFTER life after death. So, a new life after being bodily dead.
How does N.T. Wright believe Judaism affects the resurrection? Pt. 1
- Ancient Judaism has a vague idea of resurrection
- Believed that a Messiah would defeat Israel’s enemies
- BUT, Jesus wasn’t this sort of Messiah. Suffered, self-sacrificed etc
How does N.T. Wright believe Judaism affects the resurrection? Pt. 2
- Jesus’ death would have confirmed he was not the Jewish Messiah
- End of Jesus mvmt - except it wasn’t! Jewish theological beliefs only didn’t change bc Jesus’ resurrection rlly occured
- Began to preach Jesus as risen from the dead. Only reason why was because they thought he’d been bodily raised
