Joints Flashcards
(26 cards)
What is a joint?
Joints are the location where bones come together
How are joints functionally classified?
It’s determined by the amount of mobility found between adjacent bones.
What are the three main classifications of joints?
Syntharthrosis
Amphirthrosis
Diarthrosis
Define syntharthrosis joint
Immobile joint
Define amphiarthrosis joint
Slightly moveable joint
Define diarthrosis joint
Freely moveable joint
What is the structural classification of joints based on?
It’s based on whether the articulating surfaces of he adjacent bones are directly connected by fibrous connective tissue or cartilage, or whether the articulating surfaces contact each other within a fluid filled joint cavity.
What are the three structural joint classifications?
Fibrous joint
Cartilaginous joint
Synovial joint
Define fibrous joint
Where the adjacent bones are united by fibrous connective tissue
Define sutures and what type of joint is it?
Joins most bones in the skull, a fibrous joint
Define syndemosis
Type of fibrous joint in which two Parallel bones are united to each other y fibrous connective tissue .
Define gomphosis
A specialized fibrous joint that anchors a tooth to its socket on the jaw
At cartilagenous joints, what happens in synchondrosis ?
Bones that are united by hyaline cartilage to form a synchondrosis
At cartilaginous joints, what happens to form a symphysis?
Bones are united by fibrocartilage to form a symphysis
Define synovial joint
The articulating surfaces of bones are not directly connected, but come into contact with each other within a joint cavity that is filled with lubricating fluid
What are the most common joints in the body?
Synovial joints
synovial joints subdivided based on what?
The shapes of the articulating surfaces of the bones that form each joint
Name all the synovial joints
Plantar
Hinge
Pivot
Condylar
Bicodylar
Saddle
Ball and socket
Define planar joint and give a location example
At. Planar joint the surfaces of the bones are flat , which allows the bones to slide up against each other. They are found in the carpal bones of the wrist or tarsal bones f the foot.
Define hinge joint and give location example
Convex end of one bone articulates with the concave end of of adjoining bone. It allows only for bending and straightening motions, like The elbow joint
Define pivot joint and give example
Rounded portion above a bone is enclosed within a ring formed partially by the articulation with another bone and partially by a ligament . The bone rotates within the ring . Like the atlantoaxial joint found between C1 (atlas) and C2 (axis) vertebrae
Define condylar joint and give example
The shallow depression at the end of one bone articulates with a rounded structure from an adjacent bone. Like the knuckle joints of the hand
Define bicondylar joint and give example
Two distinct surfaces on one bone articulate with corresponding distinct surfaces on another bone, like the knee joint
Define saddle joint and give example
Both articulating surfaces have a saddle shape, which is concave in one direction and convex in the other, like first metacarpal bone at the base of the thumb
