Joints Flashcards
- what are joints and why are they necessary? - types of joints - joints and ligaments of the limbs : passive stay apparatus - joints and ligaments of the spine (27 cards)
What is a joint?
An articulation between two or more bones, united with cartilage or fibrous tissue, allowing varying degrees of movement and aiding in shock absorption
What are the main roles of joints?
- articulation
- movement
- shock absorption
What type of tissue connects fibrous joints?
dense fibrous connective tissue
what are 3 types of fibrous joints?
- suture - skull
- syndesmosis - splint bone and 3rd metacarpal
- gomphosis - teeth and alveoli
what connects bone in cartilaginous joints?
cartilage
what are examples of cartilaginous joints?
vertebral discs, pelvis joint and growth plate between diaphysis and epiphysis
what type of joint contains a joint cavity and is freely movable?
synovial joint - type of joint that allows a wide range of movement?
what fluid is found when bones are separated and there is a space between them in synovial joints?
synovial fluid, which is known as the joint cavity as a whole
what are the 4 types of movement in synovial joints?
- hinge - ginglymus
- plane
- pivot - trochoid
- ball and socket - spheroid
what are ginglymus joints? (with examples)
hinge joints that allow flexion and extension such as elbow or fetlock
what are trochoid joints? (with examples)
pivot joints that allow rotary movement such as C1 and C2 vertebrate
What supports synovial joints?
ligaments, joint capsule and synovial fluid
what attaches the forelimb in horses since they lack a clavicle?
a muscular thoracic sling
what type of joint is the horse shoulder?
ball and socket with hinge-like movement due to surrounding musculature
what type of joint is the horse elbow?
composite ginglymus joint
what type of joint is the carpus in horses?
composite synovial joint with hinge and plane like movement
what joints make up the distal thoracic limb in horses?
fetlock, pastern and coffin - all ginglymus joints
what is the radioulnar joint in dogs and cats?
joint that has both proximal and distal articulations
what type of joint is the sacroiliac joint?
synovial and fibrocartilaginous, with little to no movement
what is the hip joint also known as?
coxofemoral joint - a ball and socket joint with hinge-like function due to musculature
what are the components of the stifle joint?
femoropatellar and femorotibial components - composite hinge movement
what ligaments stabilise the stifle joint?
three strong patella ligaments
what is the tarsus joint also called?
hock - a composite synovial joint with hinge and plane movement
what allows horses to stand for long period of time with minimal effort?
passive stay apparatus
