Joints Flashcards
(19 cards)
What are fibrous joints
Rigid joints that have no synovial fluid
What are the 3 types of fibrous joints
- Sutures
- Sydemoses
- Gomphoses
What are the characteristics of the cartilaginous joints and give examples
They allow limited movement
They are a mixture of cartilage and skeletal structures
Describe symphysis joints and where they are found
Covered by Fibrocartilage pads made of hyaline cartilage
Pad cushions and allows limited movement
Found in the vertebral column
Describe synchondroses and where they are found
Hyaline cartilage that forms joints with bones
Found in the Epiphyseal plate
They are immovable
Describe synovial joints and give examples
These maintain balance and allow movement
Most common joint
The knee and elbow are both examples
Characteristics of a gliding joint
Allows movement from side to side and back and forth slightly
Rotation prevented by ligament
Found in the hands and feet
Characteristics and location of the hinge joint
Can only move in one direction
One bone is concave the other is convex
Found in the elbow
Characteristics of a pivot joint and location
Movement is limited to rotation around the axis
One bone is rounded, the other has a groove in it
Found between the radius and the ulna
Characteristics of the condyloid joint and location
Convex surface into which the bone fits
Permits angular movement up and down or side to side
Found in knuckles
Characteristics of the saddle joint and location
2 concave shapes that fit together almost full circular movement
Found in thumb knuckles
Ball and socket joint characteristics and location
Multi axial joint can rotate in any direction
Found in hip and shoulder bones
What is flexion
Decreases joint angle
What is extention
Increases joint angle
Hyper extention
Extends past the anatomical position
Abduction
Move away from the midline
ADDUCTION
Move towards thee midline
Circumduction
Joints permit circular rotation
What are the 3 types of joint
- fibrous
- Cartilaginous
- Synovial
