Joints Flashcards
(10 cards)
Fibrous joint
No movement is possible
Example: cranium/skull
Cartilaginous joint
Limited movement
Example: vertebral column
Synovial joint
Maximum movement
Example: hip joint
Ball and socket
Freely move in all directions
Example: hip and shoulders
Hinge joint
Only allows movement of flexion and extension
Example: elbow, knee and ankles
Pivet joints
Allows only rotation
Example: skull, vertebrae
Saddle joint
Concave on one axis and convex on the other
Example: thumbs, carpals and metacarpals
Synovial fluid
Acts as a lubricant (cushion) provides nutrition for cartilage
Ligaments
Fibrous bands that connect to articulating bones.
Assist with stability + restrict movement
JOINS BONE TO BONE
Tendons
Inelastic cords of tissue that attach MUSCLES TO BONE. Assist ligaments to hold the joint closed
