Jojo's Tube Guide Flashcards
(34 cards)
What additives are in the gold top and the red/gray speckle top tube?
Clot activator and gel for serum separation. Inversión at time of blood collection is 5x’a
What additive is in light green and green/gray speckle top tubes?
Plasma sample
Clue: light = additive starts with L
Lithium heparin and gel for plasma separation. Inversión at blood collection x’s 10
What additive is in glass red top tube?
The glass red top tube is silicon coated. Inversión at blood collection is 0
It doesn’t need a clot activator because glass doesn’t prohibit clotting
What additive is in red top plastic tube?
Red top plastic tube is silicon coated and has a clot activator. Inversión at blood collection is 5 x’s.
What additive is in an orange top tube?
Sometimes referred to as RST Tubes (rapid Separator Tube).
Additive is thrombin based clot activator, with gel for serum separation
Inversions at blood collection 5 x’s
What additive is in Navy blue top tube?
Additive is K2EDTA (di-potassium
Ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid)
INVERSIÓN IS 8 - 10x’s
If sodium heparin is the additive what would be the tube colour?
Dark Green
Inversión at blood collection is 8 -10x’s
If Lithium Heparin is the additive what would be the tube colour?
Light green
Inversión is 8 - 10 x’s
These 3 additives can all be in the same colour tube 1. Potassium oxalate/sodium fluoride 2. Sodium fluoride/Na2 EDTA 3. Sodium fluoride ( serum tube) What is the tube colour?
Gray
Inversión 8 - 10 x’s
Plasma sample
Light yellow top tubes can have one of two types of additives, name them both?
- Sodium polyanethol sulfonate ( SPS )
OR - Acid citrate dextrose additives (ACD)
You need to get a blood specimen for microbiology, they only want one yellow tube. What tube will you use?
Yellow tube with sodium polyanethol sulfonate (SPS)
This is for blood culture specimen collections microbiology.
Liquid K2EDTA IS IN WHAT COLOUR TUBE?
A glass lavender top tube
Di-potassium Ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid
What’s in a plastic lavender tube?
K2EDTA spray coated on the tube.
Inversión is 8 x’s
A white tube has the same additive as a lavender tube. What is the difference between white and lavender tube?
The white tube also contains a gel for plasma separation. Inversión is still 8 x’a
Pink has the same Additive as Lavender and white, what departments require a pink top tube?
Pink can be used for whole blood hematology.
immunohematology testing
blood donor screening.
Designed with special cross-match label for patient information. Tube inversions 8 - 10 x’s
This tube requires 3-4 inversions, name the colour of this tube and it’s additive?
Light blue sodium citrate tube
Exceptions for changing order of draw?
When there is a large no. Of one kind of tube, it may be advisable to draw one of each colour before drawing the group.
If it appears there is going to be difficulty obtaining all of the requests.if the flow stops early the phlebotomist has a better chance of more tests getting done.
How does order of draw differ for micro container tubes?
- Lavender is first because of EDTA. And to prevent specimen clotting.
- Green
- Gray
- Gold
- Red
Why do you gently invert tubes rather than shaking?
Gently invert to ensure thorough mixing of the additives. Shaking the tube can cause haemolysis
Why is the light blue tube drawn before serum tubes?
To prevent contamination with clot activators and interference with the coagulation cascade.
What serum tubes are coated with clot activator?
Plastic serum tubes, because plastic tubes do not promote coagulation.
What department and tests are done on gold top or red/grey speckle top tubes containing clot activator and gel for serum separation?
Immunology and serology dept used for chemistry determinations.
What department and tests are performed on a light green (mint) or green/ gray speckle top tube? Containing lithium heparin and gel for plasma separation.
Usually referred to as a PST TUBE (plasma separation tube). Biochemistry department for tests that require plasma
What department requires a red top glass tube that is silicon coated?
Used in biochemistry, immunology, serology and blood bank depts
