What is the role of a Rabbi?

What is the Talmud?
The Talmud is the central text of Judaism and the primary source of Jewish religious law and Jewish theology.
What is Shema?
A Jewish prayer, and the first two words of the Talmud
What is the Tanakh?
The Hebrew Bible. collection of Hebrew scriptures, including the Torah
How do you call the place of worship for Jews and what can you do there?
The synagogue. Prayer, study and assembly
What is Jewish law?
Halakha. the book that carries the laws. A sacred text
What is Mitzvot?
commandment commanded by God to be performed as a religious duty. Having the black ties on you
What is Resurrection in Judaism?
The 13th principle.
What is ‘atonement’?
the action of making amends for a wrong or injury
What is redemption?
the action of saving or being saved from sin, error, or evil.
What is a covenant?
an agreement
What is exile in Judaism?
Exile leads to suffering, suffering leads to calling out to God, and calling out to God begins the return of the Jewish people to their God and to their land.
What is a sin for Jews and what does it represent for Jewish people?
regards the violation of any of the 613 commandments as a sin. Judaism teaches that to sin is a part of life, since there is no perfect man
Explain the ritual of Rosh Hashanah?
Rosh Hashanah is celebrated at the Jewish new year. Celebrates the creation of the world and a fresh start. People have big dinners with family and go to a synagogue
Explain the ritual of Yom Kippur?
According to tradition, it is on Yom Kippur that God decides each person’s fate, so Jews are encouraged to make amends and ask forgiveness for sins committed during the past year. The holiday is observed with a 25-hour fast and a special religious service.
What is the celebration of Bar Mitzvah and Bat Mitzvah?
Bar and Bat Mitzvah ceremonies mark the transition into adulthood for young Jews. At age 13 a boy becomes Bar Mitzvah and at age 13 a girl becomes a Bat Mitzvah.
What is kosher?
Kosher foods are those that conform to the Jewish dietary regulations of kashrut
What is the rite of circumcision and why is it important? Where does it come from? When does it go back to?
According to Jewish law, circumcision is the physical representation of the covenant between God and Abraham described in the Old Testament and is required for the inclusion of males in the Jewish faith.
Explain in detail the ritual of Passover?
telling the story, discussing the story, drinking four cups of wine, eating matza, partaking of symbolic foods placed on the Passover Seder plate, and reclining in celebration of freedom.
Explain in detail the ritual of Hanukkah?
Hanukkah is celebrated in several ways. lighting each day one candle on the menorah, religious rituals can include the daily reading of Scripture, recitation of some of the Psalms, almsgiving, and singing of a special hymn. rededication of the Temple of Jerusalem after it was retaken by a group of Jewish warriors
What is the Yarmulke or Kippah?
brimless cap, usually made of cloth, traditionally worn by Jewish males to fulfill the customary requirement that the head be covered
Explain the ritual of Shabbat?
a day of religious observance and abstinence from work, kept by Jewish people from Friday evening to Saturday evening, and by most Christians on Sunday
What is specific about a Torah scroll?
is a handwritten copy of the Torah. It must meet extremely strict standards of production.
What are the main branches of Judaism?
Reform, Orthodox, Conservative
