Who was the founder of Judaism
Abraham
What did god promise Abraham
He promised Abraham that many descendants and in return Abraham had to leave home and everything behind
How did God test Abraham’s faith?
By telling him to kill his son Isaac but when he raises knife, God stopped him as he was testing his obedience and he passed.
What does Abraham’s name mean?
It means ‘Father of many’ and God promised him many descendants. Abraham means ‘exalted father’ meaning powerful.
What are the Jewish scriptures?
It was the Old Testament in which there were 39 books. This was called the Tenakh written at different times between 1200 and 165BC
What is the Tenakh?
It is the collection of Jewish scriptures and contains 24 books. The name Tenakh comes from the first letter of the three sections into which it is split, Torah, Nevim and Ketuvim.
What is the Torah?
The Torah are the Books of Law, believed to be the words of God.
What is the Nevi’im?
The prophets. These are the writings of God’s messengers and include the history of the Jewish people.
What is the Ketvim?
These are a collection of other sacred writings that contain stories from Jewish history.
What is the Talmud (In the Torah)?
Orthodox Jews believed God explained Moses in more detail, how to keep the commandments and this is recorded in the Talmud.
A guide to the Torah
Jews use the Torah as their holy book and it is written in Hebrew. YOu have to read the Torah holding a Yad which is used to follow the Hebrew words.
Why is the Torah important?
Because it is believed to contain the words of God.
Mantle - a cover which you put over the Torah to show respect.
Ark - a special cupboard where the Torah is kept.

Genesis Exodus Leviticus Numbers Deuteronomy
