What is the Tenakh?
The ‘Jewish Bible’ that consists of 24 books grouped into three parts: 1. The Torah (Law - first 5 books), 2. Nebi’im (Prophets) 3. Ketium (writings)
What is the Tulmud?
The explanation of the Torah by the rabbis which is also called the ‘oral law’
What is the Torah and Talmud considered as by Orthadox Jews?
The source of all Jewish laws which affects their daily lives
What do Orthodox Jews do?
Strictly follow laws and practices in the Torah
What do Reform Jews believe?
Traditional Jewish laws should be interpreted to suit modern life
What does the Shema confirm?
There is one God who is single, whole, indivisile and eternal
What quote from the Shema confirms that there is on God?
“The Lord is out God, the Lord alone
What quote from Genesis shows that God is the creator?
“God created the heavens and the earth”
What does God as the creator show about God?
God created all living things and he rested on the 7th day which makes it holy
What shows that God is the lawgiver?
He gave the Jews 613 mitzvot
What does God expect as the lawgiver?
People to follow, love and worship him as well as each other
What does God judge people based on?
How well they follow the laws he gave
What are Gods judgements considered to be?
Merciful and fair
What does omnipotent mean?
All-powerful
Shat does omniscient mean?
All-knowing
What does omnipresent mean?
God is everywhere at the same time
What is the Divine Presence?
The belief that God focuses his presence in a certain place
What is the Divine Presence also know as?
Shekhinah
What do Jews believe about Shekhinah?
It was focused in the temple that was destroyed in 70AD
What does the Talmud teach about God’s presence?
That God’s presence is brought into a place by doing good things
What do Jews believe about life after death?
They aren’t too concerned about it as they tjink that it’s more inportant to focus on the present
What do Jews believe about heaven and sheol?
That if they follow the faith correctly, they go to heaven (Gan Eden). Some Jews believe that those who don’t go to heaven go to sheol which is a place where you wait for your soul to he cleansed
What do Jews believe about judgement and resurrection?
Some Jews believe that they will be judged by God as soon as they die but others believe they will he judged on the day of judgement
Who is the Messiah?
The one who will be annointed as King at the End of Days (Messianic age)
