What do Jewish people refer to God as?
Jewish people refer to God as the Almighty or Hashem.
This term might be used on your exam paper.
How is God described as One?
There is only One God who cannot be split into parts. SOWA: “Hashem is the One & only” (Shema).
How is God described as Judge?
Jews believe that God will judge them on their following of the Mitzvot when they die. SOWA: “Hashem is our Judge” (Isalah).
How is God described as Law-Giver?
Jews believe that God gave them rules to follow, known as the Decalogue (10 Commandments). SOWA: “Mosaic Covenant - receiving of the Decalogue.”
How is God described as Creator?
Jews believe that God created the world and everything in it. SOWA: “God saw what he had made” (Genesis).
What is the Messianic Age?
The Messianic Age is when the Messiah returns and rules the earth.
What is the Covenant at Sinai?
This is a promise between God and his people, where God makes a covenant with Moses.
What is the nature of the Messiah?
- A descendant of King David. 2. He will know the Jewish law. 3. He will be a great warrior.
What is the purpose of the Messiah?
- He will rebuild the temple. 2. He will return the Jews to the Promised Land. 3. He will bring world peace.
What does God promise regarding the Decalogue?
Punishment will be given for those who don’t follow the Decalogue (10 Commandments).
What are Mitzvot?
Mitzvot are 613 rules that Jewish people must follow, given to Moses by God.

The idea that life is sacred and belongs to God. Jews must preserve life at all costs.
What do Jews believe about life after death?
Most believe that death is not the end, with Gan Eden as a place for the righteous and Gehinnom as a place of punishment.
What is Gan Eden?
Gan Eden is believed to be a place for the righteous after death.
What is Gehinnom?
Gehinnom is a place of punishment for those who have not followed the Almighty’s laws.
What is the significance of the belief in One God?
It helps to bring Jews closer to God by understanding what He is like and enforces the idea of worshiping only one God (monotheism).
What is the Shekinah?
The Shekinah is the divine presence of God which is still with us today.
Present at the burning bush with Moses and in the cloud and pillar of fire guiding the Israelites through the desert.
What is the significance of the Shekinah?
The Shekinah shows Jews that God is still with them today and highlights the special nature of the Temple in Jerusalem.
The Shekinah is believed to be present in the Temple.
What is a minyan?
A minyan is a quorum of 10 men needed for synagogue prayers in Orthodox Judaism.
In Reform Judaism, women can also make up a minyan.
What are the divergent views on the minyan?
Orthodox Judaism requires only men to form a minyan, while Reform Judaism allows women to participate.
What will the Messiah do according to Jewish belief?
The Messiah will come at a time of war, bring peace, rebuild the Temple in Jerusalem, and take all Jews back to Israel.
What is the Orthodox view on the Messiah?
Orthodox Jews believe the Messiah will not come until all Jews follow the mitzvot and that only God knows when the Messiah will arrive.
