Q

Metanarrative summary for judges

A

Sir Perceval narratives (hero of Arthurian legend and keeper of the Holy Grail) – the quest to leave King Arthur’s court to seek the Holy Grail to find peace and harmony.

This meta-narrative has echoes of the earlier fantasy sections also.

Sir Perceval represents Jeanette – her quest for identity. His feelings represent Jeanette’s unspoken feelings of love and loyalty to her mother and her sense of loss at her mother’s betrayal.

King Arthur here represents her mother – reflects on his sorrow of Sir Perceval leaving and his longing for his return.

Theme of ‘exile’ comes out here – exile from her mother and church and the pain this entails.
