Original Jurisdiction
Goes directly to the Supreme Ct
-Congress cannot enlarge or restrict the original jurisdiction of the supreme ct.

Appellate Jurisdiction
-Appealed to the Supreme Ct
-Congress may regulate appellate jurisdiction
Congress cannot tell the Supreme Ct what to do but they can create additional lower cts and jurisidiction.
Mootness
If a case is moot it has been resolved
Ripeness
A case is not ready to be brought into federal court
“law is being considered not yet passed”
Standing
Personal injury at stake in order to be able to bring the case
No Case or Controversy
Some sort of actual dispute
Independent and Adequate State Ground
A case will not go to Federal ct if it was based on independent and adequate state ground
“State Supreme Ct resolved the case”
Political Question
Federal Ct will not hear a case if the subject matter is about legislative work
11th Amendment
Citizens of one state cannot sue its own or another state
Exception:
-Can be sued if it consents to it
“State statute”
Government official can be sued
Municipalities can be sued
