Juliet quote 1
Act 1 ‘It is an honour that I dream not of’
Juliet is seen to be pragmatic and measured character, “it is an honour that I dream not of”, Juliet uses masterful language to show respect and please her mother whilst also expressing her true feelings and intentions.
Juliet quote 2
Act 2 ‘What’s in a name? That which we call a rose. By any other word would still smell sweet”…..romeo states “Henceforth I never will be Romeo”
Here Juliet questions the validity of names as a mean to justify her loving a man from the enemy, this demonstrates Juliet’s insightful and mature character.
In this she is rejecting the importance of family name which would have been profonde treasure to those of the older generation as it their name represents their honour demonstrating Juliet’s rebellion and disobedience.
Juliet quote 3
“Indeed I never shall be satisfied with Romeo , till I behold him- dead” – Act 3
showcases her clever manipulation of language. Through strategic pauses and ambiguous structure, she deceives her mother by appearing vengeful while secretly expressing her longing for Romeo. This moment highlights Juliet’s emotional control and maturity, suggesting that despite her impulsive love, she remains composed and calculating, not entirely reckless..
Juliet quote 4
Act 4 “where bloody Tybalt… lies fest’ring in his shorud, where, as they say At some hours in the night spirits retort.. what with loathsome smells And shrieks like mandrakes’ torn out of the earth”
Juliet’s vivid imagery of death through both sight and sound , ‘shroud’ ‘loathsome smells’ makes it feel all-encompassing, suggesting that death is inescapable and ever-present in her mind. Her paranoia and hallucinations reflect her deteriorating mental state, showing how fear and pressure have overwhelmed her, isolating her from reality.
Juliet quote 5
” O happy dagger..This is thy sheath”
The oxymoron of joyous connotations ‘happy’ starkly contrasts the deadly imagery ‘dagger’. The act of self-sacrifice characterises her as a tragic heroine where her strength and self-discovery at the start has faded as a result of the transformative force of love and has eventually led her death
