Juliet Love & Fate Flashcards
(2 cards)
“Star cross’d lovers”
1 - juxtaposition of star “lovers” and “cross’d” - creates a tonal dissonance, love is controlled by external forces, their stars have crossed and are therefore cursed
2 - their love is so powerful, that it can challenge the omnipotence of the universe - love is in conflict with the stars
3 - foreshadows the later play, where Romeo tries to defy these ‘stars’ - fate has cursed them instead of leading them together
“Swear not by the moon, the inconsistent moon”
1 - shows she already has set standards despite her impetuous nature
2 - moon can also represent the Goddess Diana, often ascociated with fertility and Child birth - Juliet does not want to swear apon her as she feels she is not ready to bare children
3 - moon also controls tides - influencial and external forces - celestial objects control their love
LINK - “It is too rash, too sudden” - she is aware of the decisions she is making, yet continues to do so
