Q

Explain why the potato pieces in 0.4 mol/dm(to the power of 3) salt solution decreased in masses when they were placed in the beaker. [3]

A

Water moves out of the cell.[1]
by osmosis[1]
Because the solution outside of the cells were more concentrated than the inside. [1]

Q

What is the definition of osmosis?.[1]

A

Osmosis is the movement of water molecules across a partially permeable membrane from a region of higher water concentration to a region of lower water concentration.

Q

The passion fruit has bright yellow spots on its leaves which look like butterfly eggs.
Suggest how mimicry helps the plant survive.[1]

A

This tricks the butterflies because this stops other butterflies laying their eggs.[1]

Q

Adult hornet moths lay eggs that hatch into larvae.

Figure 6 shows the larvae of a hornet moth.

Figure 6

The larvae of the hornet moth:
* live inside the roots of trees
* use the tree roots as a source of food
* cause damage to the tree roots.

Explain why a tree might die if the roots of the tree are damaged. [6]

A

The larvae reduces the water from the roots which means less photosynthesis. There is less glucose produced for respiration so less cellulose prodcued so less cell walls.

The larvae reduces the nitrate ions which is absorbed by the roots in the soil. This leads to fewer proteins made for growth.
Also, there is fewer magnesium ions so less chlorophyll is produced.
There is damage to phloem
so less transport of sugars to root cells and less energy is released.
