A foreman is selected who announces the guilt to the court
Qualifications
18-75
Resident in the uk for at least 5 year
Registered on the electoral register
Selection
Selected randomly by the jury central summoning bureau
Jurors are vetted by a police check or in some cases wider background checks
A summons letter is received by post
At court 15 people are randomly selected from the assembly and then 12 are chosen
Once selected they must be sworn in
Evaluation - advantages
Remain anonymous throughout
Everyone has a say
Secrecy of the jury room
Both defendant and the claimant have the chance to appeal
Evaluation disadvantages
Usually no legal knowledge required
Secrecy : no way of knowing if they understood the case
Jury tampering
Jurors and the internet
Find it boring so agree with majority vote
