What is majority verdicts?
Unanimous verdict is not reached, use majority verdict instead
if 12 jurors (full jury): 11-1, 10-2
if < 12 jurors: can only 1 disagree, (10 - 1, 9 - 1)
if < 9 jurors: must unanimous verdict, X majority verdict
What is split function?
The jury decides the facts while the judge deals with the law.
How to qualify for jury duty?
aged 18 - 75
registered as parliamentary and local gov elector
resident of the UK, the Channel Islands or the Isle of Man for at least 5 years since their 13th bday
mentally sound
How to be disqualified from jury duty? (for life)
imprisonment/detention of 5 yrs or >
imprisonment for public protection
an extended sentence
detention at Her Majesty’s Pleasure
imprisonment for life
How to be disqualified from jury duty? (for 10 years)
in the last 10 years,
1. served a prison sentence
2. given a suspended sentence
3. given a community sentence
How to be disqualified from jury duty? (temporarily)
be currently on bail
Failure to disclose bail?
Fine up to $5000

Lack of capacity

Person does not understand English well
Disability - blindness, cannot see evidence (photos, footage) clearly
What is discretionary excusal?
Anyone who has problems that will make it difficult for them to attend jury duty may be excused (under good reasons only)
