flights over large parts of Europe were cancelled for a week
spreading ash cloud from the eruption threatened to clog aircraft engines and stop
them from working

• 20% of Kenya’s economy is based on the export of green vegetables and
flowers - mainly to Europe
• When flights were cancelled
Kenyan businesses were forced to dump tonnes
of fresh vegetables and flowers costing US$1.3million a day
