KA1 Divisions Of The Nervous System And Neural Pathways Flashcards
(13 cards)
Nervous system is made up of
Brain
Spinal cord
Nerves
CNS consists of
Brain
Spinal cord
PNS consists of
somatic nervous system SNS
autonomic nervous system ANS
SNS contains
sensory and motor neurons
Sensory neurons
take impulses from sense organs to the CNS
Motor neurons
take impulses from the CNS to muscles and glands
Sensory and motor neurons control
the voluntary movement of skeletal muscles
Converging neural pathway
impulses from several neurons travel to one neurons
this increases the sensitivity to excitatory or inhibitory signals
(enough neurotransmitter provided to trigger a sensory neuron to send nerve impulse to brain)
Summation
a series of weak stimuli can produce enough neurotransmitter to trigger an impulse in a post synaptic neurons in a converging neural network
Diverging neural pathway
impulses from one neurons travel to several neurons so affecting more than one destination at the same time
Allows for dine control or simultaneous response
Reverberating pathway
neurons later in the pathway link with earlier neurons, sending the impulse back through the pathway
this allows repeated stimulation of the pathway
Impulse
Arrival of stimuli —> activation of receptor —> nerve impulse carried by sensory neurons in sensory pathways —> information processing in CNS —> nerve impulses carried by motor neurons in motor pathways —> response by effector
During fight or flight
Heart rate and blood pressure increase
Blood supplies diverted to skeletal muscles and away from gut and skin
