KA1- SUSTAINABILITY & INTERDEPENDENCE Flashcards
FOOD SECURITY
the ability of human populations to access food of sufficient qualities and quantity.
SUSTAINABILITY
doesn’t degrade natural resources upon which agriculture depends.
FOOD SECURITY must include
Quality
Quantity
Access
increasing food production depends on
-breeding higher yielding cultivars
-improvising characteristics to aid rearing and harvesting
-using fertilisers
-protecting crops from pests, disease and competition
ENERGY is lost through
-heat
-movement
-undigested food and waste
TROPHIC LEVEL
example
e.g primary consumer
LIVESTOCK VS CROP PRODUCTION
-Crops produce more energy from food per square metre
-However not all land is suitable for crops so it’s better to have livestock there
What is LIGHT
-form of electromagnetic radiation
-travels in waves
-measured in nanometres
When light comes into contact with a surface what happens?
It can be:
ABSORBED
REFLECTED
TRANSMITTED
What is light adsorbed by?
Photosynthetic pigments for photolysis (the light dependent stage) to generate ATP
Why are there more than one pigments in a leaf?
To absorb different wavelengths of light
CHLOROPHYLL A
Blue-green
CHLOROPHYLL B
Yellow-green
CAROTENOIDS
Carotene and Xanthophyll
Yellow
ABSORPTION SPECTRUM
Shows the ABSORPTION of light of each wavelength by each pigment
