KA8- Threats to biodiversity Flashcards
1
Q
what is the bottle neck effect?
A
- genetic biodiversity may be reduced
- when a large number of a species is removed from a population
- remaining small population many not have enough genetic variation to respond to enviromental change
2
Q
what can inbreeding result in?
A
poor reproduction rates
3
Q
what can inbreeding cause?
A
severe issues for long-term survival
4
Q
what is habitat fragmentation?
A
- occurs when habitats are destroyed
- small “islands” of habitats remain
5
Q
what are the habitat fragmentations charateristics?
A
- lower species diversity
- edges degrade resulting in increased competition
- this decreases biodiversity
6
Q
how are these sections of woodland combated?
A
- by joining these fragments together in the form of habitat corridors which allow access to food and mates
7
Q
what are introduced species?
A
- when we have moved (deliberately/accidently) a species to new geographical locations
8
Q
what are naturalised species?
A
- an introduced species which become established within the wild communities
9
Q
what are invasive species?
A
these are naturalised species (ones that are integrated) that spread rapidly reducing specie diversity as they eliminate natural species
10
Q
how do these invasive species succeed?
A
- out compete for resources
- hybridise with others
- prey on them
- proliferate as they may be free from predators, parasites or pathogens which would be present naturally in their habitat
