Sociological
What is this theory?
Shows that the working class are the one doing the crime and the poorer side.
What does Marxism intend?
That the ruling class has a significant overruling power over working class.
What type of crime’s are targeted by police and not targeted by police
White collar crime- Ignored by the police since it is mainly done by the ruling class.
Blue collar crime- Done by the lower social class like theft, robbery
Strengths of this theory?
That is explains the power imbalance between the ruling class and the working class.
Highlights harsher sentencing towards the blue collar crime.
What are the limitations of this theory?
That it only focuses on class, ignores other factors like gender.
White collar professionals are found liable of offences.

Penal Populism
What does this policy explain?
The government use the public to influence laws to be put into place to punish offenders.
An example is the three strike prison sentence for a third burglary conviction in 2000 introduced by the Labour Party.
