Flashcards in Katie Pearson Nevado Del Ruiz Deck (20)
Where is Nevado Del Ruiz?
America, Columbia ( Amero, North Andes).
What year did it take place?
How was the largest erruption signalled?
An Ash Cloud.
What direction did the Nazca plate move in?
Was the Nazca plate continental or Oceanic?
What is the difference between continental and oceanic plates?
Oceanic is Denser0, Continental is lighter.
The nazca plate 'SUBDUCTED' under the south american plate. True or False?
How deep did the subducting plate have to go before there was a high enough pressure foor the crust to melt?
Why did the magma ride to find a weakness?
Because it was less dense and lots lighter than the surrounding mantle.
What is the difference between magma and lava?
Magma:Above the ground
Lava: Under Ground
What happened to the plates to cause a volcano?
The plates moved until they met and then the denser plate subducted into the mantle.
Explain what happens from when the oceanic plate enters the mantle.
When the oceanic plate reaches 200km the pressure is high enough for the crust to ment into lave. As the lava is lighter than the surrounding mantle, it rises to find a weakness in the surface.
What happened during the erruption?
An ash cloud was formed. Magma shot out of the volcano and melted the snow, to therefore cause a lahar.
Explain a lahar.
mixed ash snow (water) debry moves and mud rapidly at about 30meters high.
How many people died?
Authorites told everyone that the volcano was going to errupt and took note of warnings, true or false?
False. Authorities ignored warnings!
Why was there a lack of aid?
It was hard to get aid into the area as it was in such a state of despair.
Name the plates involved.
Nazca and South American plate
Was it a composite or shield volcanoe?
