Kaylin- Chapter 6 Chemical Reactions Flashcards
(24 cards)
What is a product
Substance forming the chemical reaction
What is a reactant?
Substance/molecule that is involved in a chemical reaction
What is chemical energy?
Energy that is released in a chemical reaction that reacts, forming a new compound
What is an exothermic and reaction+example
Heat being released as a result of a chemical reaction; what boiling producing heat to the air.
What is an endothermic reaction+example
Heat required by a chemical reaction; freezing ice
What is a synthesis reaction?
Two+ substances combing to form a compound as a result of the reaction
What is decomposition reaction?
Single Compound that breaks down to form 2+ similar substances because of the reaction
What is electrolysis
Electric current producing a chemical reaction
What is combustion reaction?
Oxidation reaction of a organic compound which causes heat to be released
What is single-displacement reaction?
Reaction causing one element to take the place of another element
What is double-displacement reaction?
A gas, solid precipitate or molecular compound form due to the exchange of atoms/ions between 2 compounds
What is oxidation- reduction reaction?
Chemical change where one species loses electrons (oxidized) and the other species gains electrons (reduced)
What is radical?
Organic group that has 1+ electrons that can be bonded
What is a chemical equation?
Showing the relationship between reactants and products shown by symbols representing the chemical reaction
What is a mole ratio?
Number of moles of the substance needed to make a given amount of product in a chemical reaction
What is a catalyst?
Substance that changes the rate of chemical reaction without being consumed or changed significantly
What is an enzyme?
Protein that speeds up metabolic reaction in plants and animals but not permanently
What is a substrate?
Part, substance or element that lies under and supports another part, substance or element.
What is chemical equilibrium?
Balance where the rate of forward reaction = rate of reverse reaction and concentration of products and reactants remain the same
What does reduced mean?
Substances that accept electrons
What does oxidized mean?
Substances that give up electrons
What is a coefficient?
Number placed in front of the chemical equation to balance the chemical equation
What is the Law of Conservation of Mass?
Mass cannot be created or destroyed
What is the Law of Definite Proportion?
A chemical compound always contains the same proportion of elements by mass
