Q

Here is a right lateral view of the head and neck. Can you identify the common carotid artery, the external carotid artery, the internal carotid artery and the vertibral artery. What are the main functions?

A

The vertibral artery provides most of the blood supply to the posterior of the brain

The internal carotid artery provides most of the blood supply to the anterior of the brain

Q

Here is a sort of anterior (diagramatic) view of the head and neck arteries.

Can you identify the common carotid artery (right and left), the internal carotid artery (right and left), the vertibral artery (right and left) and the basila artery.

What are the main functions?

A

The vertibral artery joins into the basila artery and provides most of the blood supply to the posterior of the brain

The internal carotid artery proveds most of the blood supply to the anterior of the brain

Q

Difference between a stroke and a TIA (transient ischaemic attack)

A

A TIA is defined as any loss of blood to the brain lasting <24h however 90% last for <90min. A stroke is any loss of blood to the brain lasting for >24h.

Both have to have no apparent cause other than vascular
