Simon de Montfort

A

Given by Henry III who was at civil war, to secure loyalty. He sided with rebels and made kenilworth a rebel stronghold. Killed at battle of Evesham in 1265. His son called Simon promised to return it to king but de montfords supporters in the castle made it so the only way to get in was by force.

Greta siege 1266
Henry 3 gathered weapons and supplies and began his assault of kenilworth on the 25 June 1266 populations inside castle was 1,200 and had supplies to last months. Stone throwing machine bombarded it with missiles and only ended when disease and starvation crippled them on 13 December as they had only 2 days left.

A

Henry 3 gave castle to his son Edmund and he made it a more comfortable domestic building with the large kitchen and great hall.
Edmonds son Thomas increased the size of the deer park by 800 acres and also constructed a new chapel in the outer Bailey. Thomas rebelled against king Edward II and was executed four hard later Thomas brother held Edward prisoner where he resigned the throne. Arrow loops built.

John of gaunt

A

When Richard 2 was crowned he was just ten so his uncle John played a big role in the government and became even more influential than Richard.

He made it a grand display of status for his royal ambitions with the most up to date architectural features with private rooms and a chapel.

Dudley family

A

John Dudley granted castle and added stables but was later executed by queen Mary for treason.
Elizabeth gave it to childhood friend and courtier Robert Dudley and visited 4 times. In attempt to impress her and win her hand in marriage he made it a luxurious palace for parties and gave Elizabeth her own apartments. Huge fires and chambers.

During her 19 day final stay he made major changes to the garden to attempt to woo her with his privy.

1649 orders for slighting off castle with most defensive aspects being destroyed whilst keeping luxurious elements. Curtain wall destroyed.
