A

created here because Henry I wanted to control the power of Rodger Earl of Warwick

Evidence -
KH felt RE of W had too much power/was becoming a potential - Kenilworth was built 5 miles North of Warwick

KH gave permission, revenue and substantial part of Warwick’s land to Geoffrey de Clinton
Geoffrey de Clinton constructed the original stone keep - the string course line remains on the site today, so we can appreciate the scale at 2 floors

there are natural military defences in the situation of castle

Evidence:
two brooks (Finham and Inchford)
- West and South
- difficult to cross with heavy chainmail

marshy land means it’s difficult for attackers to move weaponry such as trebuchets, battering rams, siege towers

a low natural knoll - West of Kenilworth (on the site today) which gives height advantage, makes it difficult for enemy to scale, looks intimidating

surrounded by construction materials which could be used for construction

200m quarry South - red sandstone was used to construct
easier to build quickly and effectively as it was close
in 1124, Kenilworth was surrounded by a forest - scale + smaller now, but can still see evidence of a forest - timber can be used for weapons, fires, construction

Marc Morris - ‘castles are first and foremost, military instillations’
horse garrison - inner court
keep - last line of defence, tax, worship, accommodation - be seen in charge, ruling, control law, justice
this is military - elements of intimidation, the local population
East Wall = Norman arrow slits are visible on the site today
walls are 4.3m - withstand attack

overtime, impressive military features of the castle increased to protect King John against

Evidence:
the keep (N) had another floor added (can be seen by the string course line) as well as fishtail arrow loops and a fighting platform - feared rebellion from barons
castle was made concentric (extra line of defence)
Lunn’s tower added (NE) - we can still see remains of fireplace arrow loops (S)

great hall - we can still appreciate scale, 3 fireplaces evident today
kitchens - 19x7.5 metres - 2x size of average aristocratic kitchens, so able to host large banquets
strong tower - 2nd floor has lodgings, so possible to host - a surviving room can be see on the site today
