easier to build quickly and effectively as it was close
in 1124, Kenilworth was surrounded by a forest - scale + smaller now, but can still see evidence of a forest - timber can be used for weapons, fires, construction

the keep (N) had another floor added (can be seen by the string course line) as well as fishtail arrow loops and a fighting platform - feared rebellion from barons
castle was made concentric (extra line of defence)
Lunn’s tower added (NE) - we can still see remains of fireplace arrow loops (S)

great hall - we can still appreciate scale, 3 fireplaces evident today
kitchens - 19x7.5 metres - 2x size of average aristocratic kitchens, so able to host large banquets
strong tower - 2nd floor has lodgings, so possible to host - a surviving room can be see on the site today
