Abstract Noun
noun that refers to a concept of state, quality, feeling or emotion
you often cant see or touch it
Accommodation theory
suggest that we accommodate or adjust our speech to accommodate the person we are addressing
Acronym
word formed form the initial letter of other word (eg LOL)
Active Voice
when a subject or verb is the agent in performing the action
Adjacency pairs
two pairs of exchanges following a predictable pattern and found in conversation
Adverbial phrase
word or group of words acting as an adverb, giving information about time, place or manner
Adverb
a word that tells us more about the verb or adjective
Affix
groups of letters forming a part of the word usually prefix (before) to suffix (after)
Affixation
process of adding an affix before or after an existing word to change its meaning or grammatical function
Alliteration
when two or more words begin with the same sound
Amelioration
change in the meaning of a word to give it a positive meaning
Anaphoric references
a word usually a pronoun, or expression in the text that refers back to another part in the text
Analogy
the use of comparison between two cases, that are usually dissimilar.
Antithesis
A figure of speech in which sharply contrasting ideas are juxtaposed in a balanced or parallel phrase or grammatical structure
Aspect
used to show if the action is happening or continuing to happen e.g. progressive aspect verb
Assimilation
when sounds are pronounced differently form usually to make them easier to say
Assonance
when the vowel sounds in the middle of two or more words are similar
Asyndetic listing
when a listing does not involve the use of conjunctions such as “because” or “however”
Auxiliary verb
verbs that add functional or grammatical meaning to the clause in which they occur. They express tense, aspect, modality, voice, emphasis
Back channelling
a kind of feedback that shows that a person is being listed to
Blend
a word formed by combing parts of other words e.g. smog
Borrowing
a word or expression taken form another language
Broadening
when the meaning of a word is extended, the word can take on meaning
