Alliance
Agreement between one or more nations or organisations to work together to achieve a common or mutual interest
Treaty
Binding agreement between multiple nations
Appeasement
Policy adopted by Britain and France towards Germany from the mid 1930’s until 1939, designed to avoid a Second World War, by granting certain allowances to Hitler and the Nazi government.
League of Nations
International organisation established at the end of ww1 to maintain world peace and prevent the outbreak of future wars, by encouraging nations to negotiate with one another. The LON had some early success but ultimately failed in its primary purpose of preventing future wars.
Holocaust
Deliberate and systematic mass murder of Jews and other undesirables by the Nazis in ww1
Great Depression
A period of severe economic downturn between 1929 and 1939, affected most countries around the world
United Nations
International organisation, established at the end of WW2 to increase political and economic cooperation among its member countries, to promote peace and prevent a future outbreak of armed conflicts around the world
Universal declaration of human rights
Rights that all humans possess, regardless of their nationality, birthplace, residence, sex, colour, religion, language etc
Naziism
Political principles of the National Socialist German Workers Party
Genocide
The deliberate and systematic mass murder based on race, ethnicity, religion or culture
Antisemitism
Prejudice, hatred or discrimination against Jews
Fascism
A far right form of government. Power is held by one ruler or small group, under one party
Nationalism
A strong attachment to a particular country or nation
Republic
Government to which people or their elected representatives possess a supreme power
Monarchy
System of government where executive power is held by an inherited population
Armistice
Formal agreement during a war to stop fighting and discuss making peace
The Blitz
Term used to describe a period during ww2 when major cities across Britain were the target of sustained bombing campaigns by the German Air Force
Blitzkrieg
German term meaning lightning war, a military tactic adopted by German forces in ww2 involving launching sudden intense attacks on enemies, using fighter aircraft and tanks, followed by the advance of ground troops
Ghettos
Sections of towns or cities established by the Nazis during ww2 to confine and isolate Jews and other undesirables from the wider population.
