What is power?
The ability to influence or control the behavior of others to achieve desired outcomes
What is Hard power? Examples
Hard power - the use of coercion or force to achieve political objectives
EXAMPLES: Invasions, military alliances, economic sanctions
What is Soft Power? Examples
The ability to shape the preferences of others through attraction and persuasion rather than coercion
EXAMPLE: films, sports events, hosting international events
What is Smart Power? Examples
Is the strategic combination of hard and soft power to achieve foreign policy goals
What is sovereignty?
The authority of a state to govern itself without external interference
What is sovereignty divided into?
a. Internal Sovereignty - the state’s authority over its territory and population
b. External Sovereignty - the state’s recognition as an independent entity by other states
What is “pooled sovereignty” - example
sacrificing sovereignty by sharing power with other actors - examples the Euro
What are some broad challenges to sovereignty?
- The global emphasis on human rights often clashes with the principle of non-interference
- the tension between maintaining economic sovereignty and participating in global markets
- Issues such as climate change, pandemics and terrorism challenge the notion of ‘absolute sovereignty’
What is shared sovereignty? Example
Involves states voluntarily ceding some of their sovereign power to a higher body, like an international organization - EXAMPLE: the EU, NATO
What is state legitimacy?
Refers to the perceived right of a state to exercise authority and govern its people
What are the benefits of sovereignty?
- Citizens are more likely to obey laws and cooperate with government policies if they perceive the state as legitimate.
- International recognition - Legitimacy affects a state’s ability to engage in diplomacy, trade, and international agreements.
What are the challenges to legitimacy?
- Corruption and Inequality
- Authoritarianism and Repression
- External Interference
What is a non-state actor? Example
is an individual or organization that operates independently of any government, influencing politics, society, or the economy example - NGOs
What is an IGO? Example
Intergovernmental Organisation - is a group of members (sovereign states, countries) working together on issues of mutual self-interest
EXAMPLE: The UN, The EU, NATO, CARICOM
What is an NGO? Example
A non-governmental organization (NGO) is defined as a non-profit organization, group or institution that operates independently from a Government and has humanitarian or development objectives.
EXAMPLES: Human Rights Watch, Amnesty, Cure Violence, The White Helmets
What is an MNC? Example
A multinational corporation/ company
EXAMPLE: McDonalds, Apple, Nike
What is a political Stakeholder? Example
Someone who has a significant interest in or influence over political decisions, actions, or processes
EXAMPLES: Political parties, lobbyists, voters, Government officials
What is Globalisation?
The increasing interconnectedness and interdependence of nations through diplomatic, economic, and cultural interactions, often facilitated by international organizations.
