What is acute care?
Health care provided for a relatively short time (usually days to weeks) to diagnose and treat an immediate health issue.
An illness or disability that appears suddenly and lasts for a short period, usually less than 3 months.
What is an adult day centre?
A community-based program for people needing assistance during the day.
Also known as community day program.
What is an assisted-living facility?
A live-in facility where residents live in their own apartments and receive support services.
A retirement home is one type of assisted-living facility.
What is a chronic illness?
An ongoing illness or disability, slow or gradual in onset, that may or may not grow worse over time.
Also known as persistent illness.
What are community-based services?
Health care and support services provided in a community setting, not in a facility setting.
What are community-based settings?
Places within the community that provide health care and support services.
What is a community day program?
A daytime community-based program for people with physical or mental health issues or older persons who need assistance.
Also known as adult day program or adult day centre.
What is complex continuing care?
Comprehensive inpatient care provided to people recovering from surgery, injury, or an acute illness.
Also known as subacute care, convalescent care, or transitional care.
What is end-of-life care?
The physical, emotional, social, and spiritual care given to people who have stopped treatment to cure or control their disease.
May include palliative care, supportive care, and hospice care.
What are facility-based settings?
Workplaces that provide clients with accommodations, health care, and support services.
What is a group home?
A live-in facility where a small number of people with physical or mental disabilities live together and receive supervision and care.
What is hospice care?
A type of palliative care providing home, live-in, or inpatient care to clients with a terminal diagnosis who are no longer seeking life-prolonging care.
What is a hospital?
A facility for clients with acute illnesses or injuries requiring admission and care on a relatively short-term basis.
What are Indigenous or First Nations services?
Services aimed at supporting and empowering Indigenous peoples to improve access to and deliver services in their communities.

What is an outpatient?
A client who does not stay overnight in a facility.
What is palliative care?
Services for clients living with an incurable illness, aimed at improving quality of life by managing pain and distressing symptoms.
What is a persistent illness?
Another term for chronic illness.
What are psychiatric care services?
Another term for mental health care services.
What are rehabilitation services?
Methods, therapies, and educational programs used to restore or improve a client’s independence and functional abilities.
What is respite care?
Temporary care of a person requiring high levels of support, giving caregivers a break from their duties.
