Majority influence
When the majority of a group tries to influence others in the group to conform to their beliefs
Conformity
Yielding to group pressure
Obedience
Following orders from someone we perceive as having more authority than us
Situational factors
How external influences affect our behavior
Normative conformity
Conformity that is due to us wanting to fit in
Group norm
Specific ideas or assumptions held by a particular group
Confederate
An actor that is working for the experimenter who pretends to be part of the experiment
Informational conformity
People conform because they want to be perceived as correct and so follow the lead of others
In-group
Someone who is part of your group due to a common factor
Out-group
Someone who is not in your group due to not having a common factor
Deindividuation
When people are in a crowd and they lose their sense of individuality and feel more anonymous
Collectivist culture
The needs of the group are seen as more important than the needs of the individual.
Individualist culture
The needs of the individual are seen as more important than the needs of the group
Altruism
Helping others without expecting or receiving any reward
Reciprocal altruism
Where we help others and expect something back
Authority figure
Someone we perceive as having more power than ourselves
Autonomous state
Where the individual feels responsible for their own actions
Agentic state
Where the individual does not feel responsible for their own actions because they are acting under orders from an authority figure
Dispositional factors
How internal factors affect our behaviour
Locus of control
How much control a person feels they have over their own life, with reference to external and internal factors
Morality
Understanding what is right and wrong in how we think and behave
Psychopath
Someone who has a mental illness which is defined by having a lack of empathy for other people and a tendency to act immorally
Authoritarian personality
A personality type that is very obedient to authority.
Minority influence
The idea that small groups of people can change the opinion and beliefs of larger groups of people
