Define obedience in the context of social influence.
Complying or obeying with the direct orders from an authority figure.
Who is considered an authority figure?
Someone with more power or control than another.
What is conformity?
Doing something against the individual’s own inclinations to match the behaviour and beliefs of the majority.
What is normative social influence?
Compliance because of the need to fit in the group.
What is informational social influence?
When we conform to others because we believe they have accurate information.
Define compliance in social psychology.
Going along with the majority behaviour even though not privately agreeing with it.
What is internalisation?
Going along with the majority because we do not know how to behave in a situation.
What does identification mean in social influence?
Temporarily adopting the behaviour of a role model or group.
What is deindividuation?
Loss of personal self-awareness and responsibility as a result of being in a group.
What is the bystander effect/apathy?
When one fails to help another in need.
Define bystander intervention.
When you intervene and help others.
What is blind obedience?
When we comply with the orders of an authority figure without question.
What does locus of control refer to?
The extent to which we believe we have control over our behaviour/life.
Define prosocial behaviour.
Behaviour that is seen as helpful, kind, co-operative and peaceful.
What is antisocial behaviour?
Behaviour that is unhelpful, destructive and aggressive.
