What is Karma?
Every action has a reaction which affects a person’s future.
Karma is a key concept in Hinduism and Buddhism, emphasizing the moral law of cause and effect.
What is Reincarnation?
The belief that a person is born into a new body after death.
This concept is central to Hindu and Buddhist beliefs regarding the cycle of life and death.
What is a Mandir?
A Hindu place of worship.
Mandirs are often elaborately designed and serve as a focal point for community worship.
What is Trimurti?
The 3 manifested gods which Hindus worship: Brahma (Creator), Vishnu (Sustainer), Shiva (Destroyer).
Trimurti represents the cosmic functions of creation, maintenance, and destruction.
What is Brahman?
The Hindu way of explaining God. The ultimate reality.
Brahman is considered to be the source of all existence in Hindu philosophy.
What is Atman?
The Hindu view of the soul. This is what is passed from one body to another.
Atman is believed to be eternal and the true self of an individual.
What is Puja?
Hindu worship. This can include puja at home, in the Mandir or on pilgrimage.
Puja rituals can involve offerings, prayers, and various forms of devotion.
What is Nirvana?
The state of Enlightenment.
Nirvana is the ultimate goal in Buddhism, representing liberation from the cycle of rebirth.
What is the Eightfold Path?
The 8 practices for Buddhists to live by in their hope of reaching Nirvana.
The Eightfold Path includes right understanding, intention, speech, action, livelihood, effort, mindfulness, and concentration.
What is a Vihara?
The Buddhist place of worship.
Viharas can serve as monastic residences and places for meditation.
What is a Guru?
A Sikh religious authority.
Gurus are revered in Sikhism for their spiritual guidance and teachings.
What is a Gurdwara?
The Sikh place of worship.
Gurdwaras serve as community centers and places for congregational worship.
What are The 5 Ks?
The 5 articles which Sikhs should carry and live with to symbolise their faith: Kesh, Kara, Kanga, Kachera, Kirpan.
Each of these articles holds significant spiritual meaning and represents commitment to Sikh values.
What is Khalsa?
The community of Sikhs.
Khalsa was established by Guru Gobind Singh to promote equality and justice.
What is the Guru Granth Sahib?
The Sikh Holy book. This is the 11th and final guru (non-human). It contains the teachings of all the previous 10 gurus.
Sikhs regard the Guru Granth Sahib as a living Guru and a central focus of worship.
