Quantitative Data
Numerical data analysed mathematically
Qualitative Data
Contextual and subjective data, taken from observation or communication.
Primary Data
Data collected by the self
Secondary Data
Using and analysing data collected by others
Closed Question
Pre-determined categories for respondents to choose from.
Open Question
Questions without a pre-set answer

What is a Census?
Collecting information about all members of a population.
List the Probability Sampling Methods
Simple Random
Stratified
Systematic
Multi-Stage
Random Route
What is Simple Random Sampling?
Probability Sample
Each person has to same chance of being chosen.
Systematic and outside the biasing effect of human intervention.
What is Stratified Sampling?
Probability Sample
Items in sampling frame are divided into strata, then a simple random sample is selected.
What is Systematic Sampling?
Probability Sample
Pick every nth item from a list.
What is Multi-Stage Sampling?
Probability Sample
Select areas, then smaller areas, then households, then individuals.
What is Random Route Sampling?
Probability Sample
Select an address and then pick a random route from there.
List the Non-Probability Sampling Methods
Purposive Sampling
Quota Sampling
Convenience Sampling
Snowball Sampling
Self-Selection
What is Purposive Sampling?
Non-Probability Sample
Researcher selects a sample that they feel is representative of the population.
What is Quota Sampling?
Non-Probability Sample
Given a quota of particular types of people to interview and final sample should be representative.
What is Convenience Sampling?
Non-Probability Sample
Subjects that are available and easy to access.
What is Snowball Sampling?
Make contact with few respondents and have them ask other people to join.
What is Self-Selection Sampling?
Non-Probability Sample
Respondents choose to take part.
What are the Variable Types?
Nominal, Ordinal (Categorical)
Scale (Arithmetical)
What is a Nominal Variable?
Mutually excuslive, but not ordered categories - sex, religion, ethnicity
What is an Ordinal Variable?
Mutually exclusive and ordered categories - education level, income group, age group.
What is a Scale Variable?
Number variable. Measurement where the difference between two values is meaningful.
