Noun
A person, place, object or feeling
Adjective
A word used to describe a noun e.g. ‘green’ or ‘big’
Verb
A word used to describe an action or state e.g. ‘talked’ or ‘loved’ / A doing word
Adverb
A word used to describe a verb. Usually ends in ‘ly’ e.g. ‘quickly’
Simile
A comparison which is made using ‘like’ or ‘as’ e.g. ‘The sun was like an angry eye’
Metaphor
A direct comparison e.g. ‘The sun was an angry eye’ / When something is described as something it is not
Imagery
Visually descriptive language
Alliteration
The repetition of a letter in two or more words
Onomatopoeia
Sound words e.g. ‘pop’ ‘crash’
Oxymoron
A figure of speech featuring two contradictory terms e.g. cold fire
Juxtaposition
Two opposing ideas placed close together e.g. He simply loved to hate
Hyperbole
Exaggerated language e.g. ‘It would take a million alarms to wake him from his slumber’
Antithesis
A direct contrast or opposition e.g. hope is the antithesis of despair
Sibilance
The repetition of the ‘s’ sound in two or more words
Enjambement
A poetic device to describe a sentence which continues over more than one line, couplet or
stanza
Caesura
A strong pause within a line of poetry often using a hyphen or punctuation e.g. “till I behold him - dead - is my poor heart’

The repetition of a vowel sound across two or more words

Soliloquy
A device often used in plays where a character speaks to themselves. It is used to reveal the thoughts and feelings of the character

Repetition of ‘and’ connective in a sentence
