Campaigning
Actions or events organised by an individual or a group to achieve an aim.
Charities
Local national/international organisations to help others in need, e.g Children in Need.
Collective bargaining
An agreement negotiated by a union on behalf of its members about an issue.
Community
The people living in an area, place, or the people who work in a particular place, for example at the school community.
Community group
A group of people who meet together to follow a shared interest (for example a craft group, a sports team) or to influence for a change.
Consumer
Somebody who purchases goods or services.
Democracy
A system of government of the people of a country, by those people electing representatives to make laws and decisions. Rule by the majority of people.
Devolution
The transfer of some powers from the government to the Welsh assembly, the Northern Ireland Assembly and the Scottish Parliament.
Discrimination
Treating someone (or something) unfairly because they are different in some way because of their gender, sexuality, age, religion, disability or ethnicity.
Electorate
The people eligible to vote in an area.
Equal opportunities
Treating everyone with the same rights, giving the same chances to all.
Extremeism
A term used to describe the actions of individuals or groups outside the political centre of society.
Freedom of association
The individual right to join with other individuals to collectively pursue and defend common interests.
Health and safety
Guidelines and laws designated to protect people from danger.
Industrial tribunals
Independent bodies that hear and determine claims to do with employment matters, often related to conditions of employment, pay, holidays or dismissal.
Mass media
A term used to denote a section of the media designed to reach a very large audience. A way of communicating with/reaching a large quantity of people.
Political literacy
Knowledge of politics and how democracy works.
Political party
An organised group of citizens who share the same values, ideology and political views, and who wish to put forward candidates in an election to win office and gain power.
Pressure group
A group of people who take action to try to influence the government (local or national) about a specific issue.
Propaganda
Specially created information that aims to make people think in a certain way.
Referendum
A vote on a single issue.
Responsibilities
A responsibility is something we are expected to do - a duty. Responsibilities may be legal or moral.
Rights
A right is something we are entitled to by law, sometimes also referred to as an entitlement or a freedom.
Target group
A term used to describe the individuals, groups, organisations or bodies that a pressure group wish to influence.
