Key Words+ Definitions Flashcards
(14 cards)
What is the definition of cytoplasm?
Site of chemical reactions in the cell
What is the definition of nucleus?
Contains genetic material (DNA)
and controls the activates of the cell
What is the definition of the cell membrane?
Controls the movement of substances in and out of the cell
What is the definition of a ribosome?
Where proteins are made
What is the definition of the mitochondria?
Site of respiration
What is the definition of a permanent vacuole?
Contains cell sapp which keeps the cell turgid
What is the definition of a cell wall?
Supports and strengthens the cell
What is a prokaryotic cell?
These cells include bacterial cells and are much smaller in comparison. The DNA isn’t in the nucleus but in small rings called plasmids
What is a eukaryotic cell?
These cells include plant and animal cells.
What is the definition of a plasmid?
Small rings of DNA
What is the definition of bacterial DNA?
Not in the nucleus. Floats in the cytoplasm.
What is the definition of diffusion?
The spreading out of particles in a solution or gas resulting in a net movement from a area of high concentration to low concentration.
What is the definition of osmosis?
The diffusion of WATER from a dilute solution to a concentrated solution through a partially permeable membrane.
What is the definition of active transport?
Movement of substances from a more dilute solution to a more concentrated solution (against conc gradient). This requires energy from respiration
