(15 cards)
Niche
The role of an organism within an ecosystem, the effects it has on other components of the ecosystem and the effects they have on it.
Population
A group of organism of the same species living in the same place at the same time who can interbreed.
Community
The sum total of all living organisms of all species living in the same place at the same time.
Abiotic Factor
The non-living physical and chemical factors in an ecosystem that affect a population distribution and abundance.
Species
A group of organisms that are able to breed together to make fertile offspring and have the same morphology, anatomy, physiology, and behaviour.
Ecosystem
The dynamic interaction between all the living (biotic) and non-living (abiotic) factors in a given area.
Biodiversity
The variety of habitats, communities, and species in an area and the genetic diversity within populations. It includes diversity within species, between species and of ecosystems.
Biotic factor
An environmental factor caused by other living organism that affect a populations distribution and abundance.
Habitat
The part of an ecosystem where a particular organism lives.
Alleles
Different forms of a gene
Belt transect
Two parallel lines are marked along the ground and samples are taken off the area at specified points
Line Transect
A line is marked along the ground and samples are taken at specified points
monoculture
Production of a single agricultural crop
Global warming
A rise in the Earth’s mean surface temperature
Climate Change
long term trends related to precipitation, atmospheric temperature and water vapour, ocean and surface temperatures, sea level and glacier melt- all linked to burning of fossil fuels
