Kidney dissection/urinary system Flashcards
(21 cards)
functions of the urinary system
- removes certain salts and wastes from blood
- maintains water concentrations in the body
- regulated pH and volume of body fluids
- helps control blood pressure
the 4 main organs of the urinary system maintain this
homeostasis
kidney function
removes waste + water from blood and forms urin
where the kidneys are located
Attached to the back wall of abdomen
why is there a layer of fat surrounding your kidneys
Insulation + protection
ureter function
transports urin from kidneys to the bladder
bladder function
Temporarily stores urin
urethra function
excretes urin to the outside of the body
Renal Arteries function
Brings unfiltered blood to the kidney
Renal Veins function
Brings filtered blood away from the kidney
Pathway urin takes through the kidneys to outside of the body
Urine gets created in the kidney. It then enters the ureter, which transports the urine dorn to the bladder. The urine is stored in the bladder until the stretch receptors are triggered and it is time to pee. The pee exits the body through the urethra.
Urin composition
95% water
Urea
by-product of protein (how we determine amount of protein in diet)
Uric Acid
Product of metabolism of certain organic compounds
Electrolytes
Release ions in water
liters of urin produced in a day
0.6-2.5 liters
Bladder capacity
400-600 mL
Advantages of having 2 kidneys
Can filter more waste in a shorter period of time
cortex
outer most layer
medulla
middle layer (made of pyramids)
