Kingdom Fungi Flashcards
(18 cards)
Mycology
Study of fungi
Heterotrophs
Organisms that depend on another organism
Parasite
An organism that lives on or in another organism, taking nourishment from the host, usually without killing it
Saprophytic
organisms that obtain food from dead, decaying material
Parasitic
organisms that obtain food from living matter, but usually does not kill organism
Extracellular digestion
fungal strands (hyphae) that secrete digestive enzymes to dissolve food, food is absorbed through cell walls
Hyphae
tiny filaments that make up a multicellular fungus or water mold (slime mold)
Mycelium
web of hyphae, forms body of fungus
Stalk
Stem of mushroom - part of the fruiting body of a mushroom
Chitin
cell walls of fungi are made up of this
Multinucleate
having two or more nuclei
Symbiosis
the relation between two different species of organisms that are dependent on one another (interdependent)
Mutualism
a symbiotic relationship in which both species benefit from the relationship
Sporangium
a spore capsule in which spores are produced
Conjugation
temporary union of two organisms for the purpose of DNA transfer
Spore
a unit of reproduction that can survive unfavorable conditions and develop into a new organism
Name Four Groups that can fit into Kingdom Fungi:
Lichens (algae and fungi)
Molds
Yeasts
Mushrooms
Are yeasts multicellular or unicellular?
Unicellular
