Ahaziah went with Joram, king of Israel, to fight Hazael the king of Syria. Joram was wounded and went to Jezreel to heal. Ahaziah went to see him. But Jehu was meanwhile anointed king and came to assassinate Joram in Jezreel. Since Ahaziah was also there, Jehu killed him too. Seeing that Ahaziah was dead, Athaliah killed all the heirs to the throne and reigned in Judah.

Joash was hidden from Athaliah when she killed all the heirs to the throne and took the throne for herself. After seven years in hiding, they anointed him king at the age of seven.

Jehoiada, the priest, had hidden Joash for seven years. When Joash was anointed king, they killed Athaliah and Jehoiada instigated the destruction of Baal worship. This is around the same time that Jehu put an end to Baal worship in Israel.
