Knee Complex Flashcards
(41 cards)
Knee complex is composed of 3 bones
o Femur (distal segment)
o Tibia (proximal segment)
o Patella
3 articulating surfaces
o Medial Tibiofemoral jt
o Lateral Tibiofemoral jt
o Patellofemoral jt
2 flat condyles
plateau
larger to withstand greater force or pressure
Medial condyle
sits within femoral intercondylar fossa during knee extension
Intercondylar eminence
insertion of quads via ligamentum
patella (which is a tendon)
Tibial tuberosity
insertion of SGT
Upper medial tibia
insertion of ITB
Gerdy’s tubercule
Largest sesamoid bone
PATELLA
Normal Q angle
o Male: 10-14 degrees
o Female: 15-23 degrees
Normal tibiofemoral angle
170-175 degrees
↓ lat tibiofemoral angle
GENU VALGUM
↑ lat tibiofemoral angle
GENU VARUM
Largest joint in the body
TIBIOFEMORAL JT
Cover ½ to 2/3 of the articular surface of the tibial
plateau
MENISCI
C-shaped
MEDIAL MENISCUS
Less mobile
MEDIAL MENISCUS
Prone to injury
MEDIAL MENISCUS
O-shaped
LATERAL MENISCUS
More mobile
LATERAL MENISCUS
Less injured
LATERAL MENISCUS
Provide medial-lateral stability
COLLATERAL LIGAMENTS
What does LCL limit?
Varus force
What does MCL limit?
Valgus force
