Q

What is Modulation?

A

Modulation is the variation in the voice and speech used to convey
Meaning, mood and emotion. Presenters particularly need to take the
Following into account.

  • Pace – the speed and timing of speech.
  • Pitch – use of the voice’s range and flexibility.
  • Tone – conveying a range of emotions and degrees of forcefulness through the use of
    The voice.

Q

How is the voice Produced

A

the human voice produces sounds in the following manner:
1. air pressure from the lungs creates a steady flow of air through the trachea (windpipe) - larynx (voice
box) and pharynx (back of throat).
2. the vocal folds in the larynx vibrate, creating fluctuations in air pressure that are known as sound waves.
3. resonances in the vocal tract modify the sound waves according to the position and shape of the lips, tongue, soft palate
and other speech organs - this process creates different qualities of voiced sound.
4. mouth and nose openings radiate the sound waves into the environment.
when air is controlled, the voice is controlled. this allows us to make the verbal delivery sound more varied and interesting.

Q

What are the organs of articulation

A

sound is turned into speech by the use of the organs of articulation. these are the tongue, the teeth, the teeth ridge, the lips and the hard and soft palates. a vowel sound is an unobstructed sound formed by the changing shape of the mouth.

Q

What is Audibility

A

Strong, secure breath (breath supported by the abdominal, diaphragmatic and intercostal muscles and released freely
And easily)

Forward placement of resonance (air and sound brought forward in the mouth, using the hard palate as a sounding
Board)

Q

What is Intelligibility

A

Clarity of speech (tongue and lip muscularity ; precise articulation)

Appropriate emphasis and modulation (varying use of stress, volume, pace, pitch, inflection, tone colour and pausing,
According to the thought and emotion being expressed)

Tips

A

When you practise your exercises, make sure that your spine is lengthened, your shoulders, neck and jaw are free from tension, and there is space inside your
Mouth and an adequate breath force to bring the sound forward. It is important that you try not to think about all of this when you are speaking or
Performing. You must practise your exercises so that it comes to you naturally.

The quality of sound will also be affected if the resonators are unhealthy (e.G. If you have a cold or sore throat).

Unfortunately, there is little you can do to counteract the effects of illness on the quality of the sound.
