What are the main considerations for ensuring that you are delivering good quality chest compressions?
Ratio - 30:2
Rate - 100-120
Depth - 5-6cm
Minimise interruptions, starting compressions as soon as possible
Allow full chest recoil
What is the normal adult tidal volume, and what are the risks associated with inaccurate BVM
Normal range 460-500
Deliver a volume that produces visible chest movement
There will be no rise and fall
Over ventilating - regurgitation of stomach contents causing a blocked airway.
What is the chain of survival and describe its relevance to paramedic practice
Early recongnition and call for help, to prevent cardiac arrest.
Early CPR- To buy time
Early defibriliation - to restart the heart
Post resuscitation care - To restore quality of life
delays can lead to tissue death
increase survival to discharge
Describe the adult choking algorithm as per the 2021 resuscitation guidelines
Conscious patient - encouraged to cough, generating pressure, then 5 back slaps, 5 abdo thursts.
Unconscious - CPR
what would you do if there was regurgitation of stomach contents into the patients airway
Use suctioning in a figure of 8 to clear the airway, turn the patient on their side postural drainage
Describe the considerations for ensuring shock safety when using defibrillator
Everyone clear from patient
oxygen and oxygen mask removed
pads placed in the correct location
skin is clear and dry before placing the pads.
