Free verse
Poetry that does not rhyme and doesn’t have a regular meter.
Trench poetry
World War I, poets-turned-soldiers. Some poems written by regular soldiers who found an outlet to express their wartime experiences in a creative way.
Suffragettes
Members of an activist women’s organization, early 20th century. Fought for the right to vote in the UK.
Diamond Jubilee

Existentialism
A protagonist who exists in a chaotic and seemingly meaningless environment, is forced to determine their purpose in the world.
Realism
Represents reality by writing about mundane experiences as they are in real life. Depicts familiar places and stories about middle and lower classes of society. No dramatizing or romanticizing.
Naturalism
Social conditions, heredity, and environment have inescapable force in shaping human character. Naturalistic writers were influenced by the evolution theory of Charles Darwin. Extreme realism, survival of the fittest.
Beat poetry
In the 1940s and 50s, a new generation of poets rebelled against the conventions of mainstream American life and writing.
Mise-en-scene
Refers to all of the elements that comprise a single shot; that includes, but is not limited to, the actors, setting, props, costumes, and lighting (everything that appears within the frame of the camera).
The Globe Theatre
Opened in 1599. Three-storey, open-air theatre. Circular shape. The yard was surrounding the stage from three sides (people could pay a penny to stand there and watch the shows). On three levels there were more expensive seats.
