What was the Melting Pot?
The melting pot was where America encouraged immigration as they hope the immigrants would be workers to make the country richer.
By 1919, haw many people arrived to America?
40 million people arrived.
What was the purpose of the open door policy?
The purpose of the open door policy was to make immigration as easy as possible.
Who was living in America at this time?
The early immigrants, Native Americans, Black Americans, Eastern and Southern Europeans, Asian people, and Hispanics.
What were the push factors?
• Escaping from poverty in their own country
• Escaping from political and economic persecution
What were the pull factors?
• A promise of religious tolerance and a chance to practice their faith safely
• A plentiful supply of land and the hope of owning property
• Creating a better life
• A spirit of adventure, going go a country of opportunity
• Equal opportunity

Why did people start to feel angry?
People started to feel angry because: many were Roman Catholics or Jews, they were often poor, many were illiterate and the fear of communism

What did Americans fear?
Many Americans feared the spread of communism and anarchist ideas
Hoe did they view immigrants during this period?
They viewed immigrants with increasing suspicion
What was Xenophobia?
Xenophobia was the dislike of prejudice against people from other countries
Why were people afraid of communism?
Many Americans were frightened by the communist revolution that had happened in Russia during October 1917

In September 1920, a bomb exploded on wall street killing 38 people and another bomb destroyed the Attorney general A. Mitchell Palmer

Feelings of Anger and amosity arose towards communsim

The palmer raids were a response to imaginary threats

What rumours did palmer share about the red scare?
Said that there were around 150,000 communists living in the country
What were the consequences of this?
6000 people were arrested and held in prison without a hearing and hundreds were deported
