What was the melting pot?
The melting pot was where America encouraged immigration as they hoped the immigrants would work and make the country richer
By 1919, how many people arrived??
40 Million people arrived
What was the purpose of the open door policy??
The purpose of the open door policy was to make immigration as easy as possible
Who was living in America at this time??
The early immigrants, native Americans, Black Americans, southern and eastern Europeans, Asian people and hispanics
What were the push factors?
• To escape poverty in their own country
• To escape political and economic persecution
What were the pull factors??
• A promise of religious tolerance and a chance to practice their faith safely
• A plentiful supply of land and the hope of owning property
• Creating a better life
• A spirit of adventure, going to a country of opportunity
• Equal opportunity

Between 1900-1914, 13 million people arrived
What did the Americans start to doubt??
The Americans started to doubt that the open door policy was working

1.25 million people were processed on Ellis island in 1907
Why did people start to feel angry?
People started to feel angry because; many were Roman-Catholics or Jews, they were often poor, many were illiterate and the fear of communism
What did the government believe about the new immigrants?
The government believed that the new immigrants did not enrich life and culture of the USA
What was the result of this?
As a result the open door policy began to close
What increased?
Fear of immigrants/xenophobia increased
What was the Literacy Test, 1917??
Immigrants had to pass a series of reading and writing tests in the literacy test 1917.
Why were the tests unfair
Many of the poorer immigrants, especially those from Eastern Europe had recieved no education and therefor failed the tests, and were refused entry
